Cancer defeated by diamonds: discovering new therapy with precious stones

How many times have we thought that the care or treatment that they were the ultimate solution against cancer? Yet, every day we get new news and who knows that we can not consider new hope for sufferers. If the statistics tell us that cancer affects 2.5 million Italians in the world the figure is even higher and that is why scientists never stop in the search for permanent solutions.

The solution of today tells us of a new technology based on diamonds and precious stones which, when combined with chemotherapy, have a greater antitumor efficacy in difficult to treat. But if you're thinking of magnificent jewels, you are mistaken. In fact, research conducted at Northwestern University in Evanston and published in Science translational medicine is not intended to precious stones as we are used to seeing, but nano-diamonds, tiny particles of carbon that is combined with doxorubicin, a chemotherapy drug antibiotic.

For now, the tests were only conducted on laboratory animals, dividing the mice into two groups: the first was given the care with nano-diamonds and doxorubicin, in the second case, only the drug. Well, the levels of the drug were significantly higher in mice that had taken with nano-diamonds, but above all, the tumor had regressed.

Although initially, this discovery could be an important way to strengthen the existing health care and make them more effective against more aggressive tumors such as lung cancer that is diagnosed with a test. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, assured Marilyn Monroe, but in this case are also a valuable friend of our health.

When it comes to diamonds, however, to embitter the prices are still too high, but this time scientists ensure that the treatment with nano-diamonds is not prohibitive: the micro-particles of carbon, in fact, can be produced at relatively low cost and then be quite accessible. If you thought the blue diamond auctioned for $ 6.4 million, is not the case.

The nano-diamonds will cost less, but do not yet know if they have the same effect on humans than it had on laboratory mice. What you can do for now is to continue the search, keeping in mind this particular field to search for a solution that can truly be said to be effective and definitive.
