Ovarian cancer is controlled by a molecule: it measures the severity of the disease

The research will save lives. Every day we read about new findings that science gets in the prevention and treatment of some diseases, for now, threaten our lives. Just a few days ago we realized that ovarian cancer is ignored by a woman in three and even confused with the uterus, and now instead we get good news in this sector.

Italian researchers at the Mario Negri have in fact discovered a molecule able to calculate the severity of ovarian cancer and to provide even if they recur after treatment. A big step forward if you switch from almost total disinformation about new ways to combat it. The miR-200c molecule inhibits the growth of the tumor and if present in women at the first stage of the disease, indicating a good chance of recovery.

The research, published in Lancet Oncology and funded by the Italian and Cariplo Foundation for Cancer Research, has a matrix is all-Italian and a real pride from the fact that ovarian cancer is not well known by most. The team of scientists has isolated this micro-RNA molecule that, unlike the RNA molecule does not produce proteins necessary for the body, but regulates the operation of other genes, including those that determine the growth of ovarian cancer.

"Our study - says Maurizio D'Incalci, director of the department of oncology of the Mario Negri - shows that there is a molecular signature that defines the survival of patients. In particular, one of these small RNA molecules, called miR-200c, the association between its presence in tumor cells and the disease was very strong.

And was confirmed statistically on two completely independent series of patients. " In practice, where it has been detected a high concentration of miR-200c, the chance of recovery is much higher. Ovarian cancer affects 5,000 women a year and 75% of cases (3 of 4) are diagnosed late and therefore only 30-40% of patients recover.

If diagnosed in time, as occurs in only 25% of cases, the chances of recovery are about 80 to 90%. We must hope that science continues to move forward in research to arrive at a diagnosis as early as early cervical cancer with an ultrasound that is discovered before symptoms. And today, those women who a few days ago did not even know what an ovarian cancer, now they know there may be a good chance to beat him with early prevention and proper information.
