Vaginal birth after caesarean section: when is it possible?

Despite the WHO (World Health Organization) is encouraging natural childbirth, which should constitute the vast majority of births in Italy the percentage of cesarean is still much higher than the European average. About 15% of babies come to light thanks to this surgery, sometimes not really necessary.

But how to ask a mother who has already given birth by caesarean section, before a new pregnancy? Can legitimately ask to have a natural birth? Yes, but with many reservations. There are a number of requirements needed to ensure that, after a first child born surgically, but the second may be born more naturally.

Meanwhile, the type of cesarean done before: cross cutting down (which, then, is the most practiced) may not cause problems in a subsequent labor naturally. However, this only if the intervention has been performed in more than 24 months after the next delivery and only if the fetus does not exceed 4 kg.

The age of the pregnant woman counts for more security is not recommended a vaginal birth after a cesarean section to mothers over 35 years. Impossible, then, if the caesarean have been sustained more than one, if the twin pregnancy and, finally, if the baby is in breech position. What is the main risk to which the mother who had previously had a cesarean during labor would face? This is a rare event (1% of cases), but nonetheless, present: uterine rupture at the scar.

However, if the mother was holding all the cards in order to deal with a vaginal delivery, you try the "trial of labor" is constantly monitored by a gynecologist, in order to intervene surgically if there is any complication. The best thing is that the expectant mother well assess any possible risks with your doctor, so that at the time of delivery, can feel safe, secure and peaceful, and enjoy the most complete service.
