March 8 Women's Day: the history and the true meaning of mimosa

It would be useless to try to ignore the fact that today, March 8th, we celebrate the International Women's Day, better known as Women's Day. In an age where we still need to take to the streets to defend our rights - as in the event when If not now - this festival is to be considered for a moment to pause and reflect on our modern condition.

Only recover the true historical significance, it can give new force to be our desire to reclaim the woman and for that, yes, celebrate. The 8th of March was established in 1977 by decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations to recognize "the efforts of women to peace and the need for their full and equal participation in civil and social life." Why is this date? In fact, in the last century women were chosen on March 8 to celebrate their achievements and to become protagonists of great events.

Like, for example, the great march in 1908 that tens of thousands of workers organized in New York to obtain decent work and pay more for the right to vote and the abolition of child labor. To the cry of: "Bread and Roses" American women asked for a better life and greater attention by the world.

Instead of roses, mimosas and we use today, besides the bread, we demand the dignity of being able to earn in a lawful and honorable. For some time, however, has spread the erroneous belief that March 8 is celebrated to commemorate the 146 workers - including 129 women - killed in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Company to shirts in New York, in reality, ' fire occurred on March 25 but after that tragedy were achieved enormous improvements in the field of workers' rights.

What we want to ignore it, or Hosanna, this festival is symbolized by happiness mimosa only here, in Italy, where Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei, two activists of hearing (Union of Italian Women) in 1946 they decided to combine a flower with this event and because the choice fell on mimosa blossoms in early March and does not cost much, so it is accessible to many.

From the first expressions of feminist, Women's Day has now become a purely commercial phenomenon, completely altered. Furthermore, it is the fault of those women who say no, who oppose the ideology of mass, which rebel against the vision defined by the males in power, there are left at home to the brain.

We are women every day of the year and, although the March 8 we want to celebrate, it is not wrong: the important thing is to show that women with the capital at any other time in our lives.
