Birkenstock Sandals: A Complete Guide to Maintenance and Cleaning

The Birkenstocks are synonymous with comfort and freshness, made from natural fibers and designed to give support to the foot with their foot bed. I wore my first Birkenstocks several years ago during a cultural holiday and found them insurmountable: the feet do not hurt even after hours of walking and breathing without sweating.

Not everyone loves Birkenstock because aesthetics leave something 'to be desired - even if the azienza produces new models every year, varying shapes and colors - and the cost is quite high. I find that to be money well spent because it is a quality product, durable (those sandals worn on vacation years ago are still in good shape) and above all comfortable.

Of course I do not wear this type of sandals for all occasions, but when I know I have a long walk I like to choose the comfort for my feet. You too have a pair of Birkenstocks? Here are some tips for maintenance and cleaning of these sandals, which tend to get dirty and in some cases to smell if not treated properly.

1. Clean the outsole The best procedure is to clean the Birkenstocks do by hand, using mild soap and a toothbrush. In this case I used an old toothbrush, but maybe a classic nail brush or a toothbrush suitable for shoes. Shoes wet with cold water, sprinkle with the sole of mild liquid soap and started brushing vigorously, insisting on the most dirty, you'll form a froth that sometimes tend to brown first.
Rinse with cold water the sole and repeat until the froth is not white.

2. Clean the top Now that you've cleaned the sole focus on the top of the sandal, the upper. Again, this needs to be brushed because usually much dust - especially if it is shiny and not dull, as in my sandals. Corpargi the top of soap and brush carefully, both above and below.
Then rinse, again with cold water and repeat if needed.

3. Rinse with cold water after you have brushed for the sandals wash well with cold water, to remove any residual soap. The best way is to fill the sink to wash them and immerse them in water, rubbing the sole and upper with good hands.

4. Leave them to dry Finally, sandals dripping in the sink and then put him in a ventilated area but not in direct sunlight. The ideal is to place them with the soles upwards inside out, making sure that it is possible, but the shade outdoors. After a few hours your shoes will be dry and clean, ready to wear again for the next walk! If you wash your shoes in the winter you can put them to dry in a dry area, away from heat sources such as the radiator.

This treatment should be done at least once a month to keep your shoes smelling, clean and in good shape. If your feet sweat a lot and use every day for long periods sandals I suggest you wash them every two weeks, considering them almost as an article of clothing. How NOT to Wash Birkenstock Sandals Birkenstock sandals Many put in the washing machine, but this procedure is not recommended because the sole hardens and is likely to come off, the cork can also be damaged from the centrifuge and heat.

If you really want to wash your shoes in the washing machine (although hand washing is much better), make sure you do a cold wash and place pan in a very mild soap, but remember that the sandals are likely to spoil a lot. The Daily Maintenance of Birkenstock sandals and wear sandals Sudi very long? In this case you should follow a definite daily maintenance: after removing your shoes let him get some 'air and then sprinkle the slab of baby powder.
